Netflix NZ Price: Every Plan and the Extra Member Fee

Netflix has three plans in New Zealand and, unlike most of the world, no advertising tier — at least not yet. This page lists what each one costs, what the extra member fee is for, and where the price sits against everything else on the market.

NZ streaming cost calculator

Tick the services you pay for and pick the plan. The calculator shows what your streaming stack costs per month and per year in New Zealand dollars, plus the cheapest way to keep the same shows.

Prices are the standard NZ monthly rates verified in September 2026 (Netflix, Disney+, Neon, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV, Sky Sport Now, Crunchyroll); YouTube Premium and Spotify are approximate. TVNZ+, ThreeNow and Freeview Streaming TV are free with ads.

Those prices have been in place since April 2025, when Netflix raised all three tiers — Basic from NZ$14.99, Standard from NZ$20.99 and Premium from NZ$27.99. Billing is monthly only; Netflix does not sell an annual plan here, and there is no free trial.

What the extra member fee actually buys

Since paid sharing arrived in New Zealand in February 2023, an account is meant to be used within one household. Someone outside it needs their own profile added as an extra member at NZ$9.99 a month. Standard allows one extra member and Premium allows two; Basic allows none. Extra members must be in the same country as the account owner, so this does not cover family overseas.

Is an ad-supported plan coming?

Netflix has said an ad-supported plan will launch in New Zealand in 2027. No price has been announced. In markets where it exists, the ad tier sits well below the Basic price, so it is worth waiting for if you are price-sensitive and do not mind ad breaks.

How Netflix compares here

At NZ$25.99, Netflix Standard is the most expensive mainstream entertainment subscription in New Zealand apart from sport. Disney+ starts at NZ$9.99 with ads, Prime Video is NZ$10.99, and Neon’s ad tier is NZ$14.99. TVNZ+ and ThreeNow cost nothing at all.

That gap is why rotating matters. Every one of these services can be cancelled and restarted without penalty, and most households discover they watch one service closely each month. Our streaming service comparison has a calculator that totals a subscription stack across a year — the figure usually surprises people.

Getting the quality you are paying for

Premium only makes sense if your television and connection can use it. 4K needs roughly 25 Mbps per stream, a compatible TV and a 4K-capable app; a 1080p screen sees no difference at all. If playback drops to a soft picture during the evening, the constraint is usually Wi-Fi rather than the plan — our speed test and the guide to connections that keep dropping out will tell you which.

VPNs and the Netflix catalogue

Netflix’s terms say content is for the country where your account was set up, and the service detects and blocks most VPN and proxy addresses — it is one of the strictest in the industry. Using a VPN in New Zealand is legal, but expect a proxy error rather than a bigger catalogue, and note that VPN connections do not work with Netflix’s live events. Our best VPN guide covers what providers can and cannot do here.

Disclaimer

Prices are as at September 2026 and are set by Netflix, which changes them without notice — check netflix.com before subscribing. Using a VPN is lawful in New Zealand, but accessing another country’s catalogue breaches Netflix’s terms of use.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Netflix in New Zealand?

NZ$17.99 a month for Basic, NZ$25.99 for Standard and NZ$33.99 for Premium. An extra member costs NZ$9.99 a month on the Standard and Premium plans.

Does Netflix New Zealand have an ad-supported plan?

Not yet. Netflix has said one will arrive in 2027; no price has been announced.

Is there a Netflix free trial in New Zealand?

No. Free trials ended here years ago. The only way to try it is to subscribe for a month and cancel before the next billing date.

What is the cheapest way to watch Netflix in NZ?

The Basic plan at NZ$17.99, accepting one stream and 720p. Sharing a Premium plan within one household across four screens works out cheaper per person, but everyone must live at the same address.

Why does Netflix charge for extra members?

Because accounts are licensed per household. Paid sharing lets someone outside your home keep their own profile, viewing history and recommendations for NZ$9.99 a month, within the same country.

Can I pay for Netflix annually in New Zealand?

No, billing is monthly. Gift cards exist but they simply credit the monthly charge.

Do I need Premium for 4K?

Yes, 4K and HDR are Premium-only, and you also need a 4K screen and about 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth per stream. On a 1080p television there is nothing to gain.
