HBO Max NZ: Prices, Plans and What Changed for Neon Viewers

HBO Max NZ: Prices and Plans

HBO Max launched in New Zealand on 16 June 2026, and the same month HBO’s programmes left Sky and Neon. If you watched House of the Dragon or The White Lotus on Neon, they now live on a separate subscription. This guide covers what HBO Max costs here, the two ways to subscribe, what it carries and whether it earns a place in your streaming line-up.

HBO Max prices in New Zealand

StandardNZ$15.99NZ$159.992 at once1080p
PremiumNZ$20.99NZ$209.994 at once4K with Dolby Atmos

There is no ad-supported tier in New Zealand. The yearly plans work out at about NZ$13.33 and NZ$17.49 a month — a saving of roughly two months’ fees if you are sure you will keep it for the year.

A launch offer gave introductory rates of NZ$10.99 (Standard) and NZ$15.99 (Premium) for the first six months to people who signed up by 16 July 2026. That offer has closed; if you took it, expect the full price once the six months run out.

Tick the services you pay for and pick the plan. The calculator shows what your streaming stack costs per month and per year in New Zealand dollars, plus the cheapest way to keep the same shows.

Prices are the standard NZ monthly rates verified in September 2026 (Netflix, Disney+, Neon, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV, Sky Sport Now, Crunchyroll); YouTube Premium and Spotify are approximate. TVNZ+, ThreeNow and Freeview Streaming TV are free with ads.

Two ways to subscribe

  • Directly through the HBO Max website or app, billed by HBO Max.
  • As a Prime Video channel, added inside the Prime Video app and billed through Amazon. You need a Prime Video subscription (NZ$10.99 a month) as well, and HBO Max content then plays inside the Prime Video app with no separate login.

The channel route suits people who already live in Prime Video and want one bill. Subscribing directly gives you the full HBO Max app and its own profiles and downloads, and keeps HBO Max independent if you later cancel Prime Video.

What HBO Max carries

The service brings together HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, DC titles and the Harry Potter films. House of the Dragon’s third season premiered on HBO Max in New Zealand on 22 June 2026, a week after launch — the first big HBO release not carried by Sky or Neon.

What changed on Sky and Neon

Sky did not renew its output deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, and HBO programming came off Sky and Neon in mid-June 2026. Sky has filled part of the gap with an exclusive deal with Paramount, signed in January 2026, which brings new Showtime, Paramount+ and CBS series to Sky and Neon. Our Paramount Plus guide explains that side of the deal.

Is HBO Max worth it?

It depends on how much HBO you actually watch. For a household that followed HBO drama on Neon, HBO Max at NZ$15.99 a month is now the only way to keep doing so, and it costs less than Neon’s ad-light Standard plan. For occasional viewers, subscribing for a month or two around a big release and then cancelling is cheaper than paying all year.

Picture quality and your connection

4K and Dolby Atmos are Premium-only. For 4K you want about 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth per stream, which any fibre plan provides; the bottleneck in most homes is Wi-Fi reaching the television. Run our speed test from the lounge if the picture keeps softening.

HBO Max, VPNs and travel

Before June 2026, New Zealanders used VPNs to reach the American HBO Max. That is no longer necessary for HBO’s main catalogue, and it was always against HBO Max’s terms. Catalogues still differ between countries because of licensing, and streaming services block known VPN addresses, so a VPN is an unreliable way to see another country’s library. If you travel and want your home services, connecting to a New Zealand server is the usual approach; it is legal here but may still breach a service’s terms. Our best VPN guide notes which providers run Auckland servers.

Disclaimer

Prices, plans and catalogue details are as at September 2026 and set by HBO Max, which can change them at any time. Using a VPN is lawful in New Zealand, but accessing a service from outside its licensed territory may breach its terms of use.
