If you had been following House of the Dragon or The White Lotus on Neon, those titles now sit behind a separate subscription. HBO Max prices in New Zealand
HBO Max sells two ad-free plans here. There is no cheaper ad-supported tier in New Zealand, so the entry price is the Standard plan.

The yearly plans work out at roughly NZ$13.33 and NZ$17.49 a month — a saving of about two months’ fees if you are confident you will keep the subscription for a full year. The official plan and availability details are set out on HBO Max’s New Zealand help pages.
A launch promotion offered introductory rates of NZ$10.99 (Standard) and NZ$15.99 (Premium) for the first six months to anyone who signed up by 16 July 2026, as Witchdoctor’s launch coverage noted. That offer has closed; if you took it, expect the full price once your six months run out.
Two ways to subscribe
- Directly through the HBO Max website or app, billed by HBO Max, giving you the full app with its own profiles and offline downloads.
- As a Prime Video Channel, added inside the Prime Video app and billed through Amazon, so HBO Max plays inside Prime Video with no separate login.
An important clarification: you do not need a paid Amazon Prime membership to use the channel route. HBO Max is offered as a Prime Video Channel that anyone with an Amazon account can add, and Amazon simply handles the billing, as trade outlet IF reported at launch. The ongoing price is the same either way; the channel simply keeps everything on one Amazon bill, while subscribing directly keeps HBO Max independent if you later leave Prime Video.
What HBO Max carries
The service brings together HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, DC titles and the Harry Potter films. House of the Dragon’s third season premiered on HBO Max in New Zealand on 22 June 2026, a week after launch — the first major HBO release not carried by Sky or Neon.
What changed on Sky and Neon
Sky did not renew its output deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, and HBO programming came off Sky and Neon in mid-June 2026, as set out in Sky’s NZX announcement on its content arrangements. How to sign up in New Zealand
Getting started takes a few minutes:
- Go to hbomax.com or download the HBO Max app, or open the Prime Video app if you prefer the channel route.
- Choose Standard or Premium, and monthly or yearly billing.
- Create or sign in to your account and enter a New Zealand payment method.
- Install the app on your television or streaming device and sign in.
HBO Max runs in a web browser and on iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Apple TV, Android TV, LG and Hisense (VIDAA) smart TVs, and PlayStation and Xbox consoles, so most New Zealand living rooms are already covered.
Is HBO Max worth it?
It depends on how much HBO you actually watch. For a household that followed HBO drama on Neon, HBO Max at NZ$15.99 a month is now the only way to keep doing so, and it undercuts Neon’s ad-light Standard plan. For occasional viewers, subscribing for a month or two around a big release and then cancelling is cheaper than paying all year. Picture quality and your connection
4K and Dolby Atmos are Premium-only. For 4K you want about 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth per stream, which any fibre plan provides; the bottleneck in most homes is Wi-Fi reaching the television rather than the internet plan itself. Run our speed test from the lounge if the picture keeps softening.
HBO Max, VPNs and travel
Before June 2026, New Zealanders used VPNs to reach the American HBO Max. That is no longer necessary for HBO’s main catalogue, and it was always against HBO Max’s terms of use. Catalogues still differ between countries because of licensing, and streaming services block known VPN addresses, so a VPN is an unreliable way to see another country’s library.
