Hulu does not operate in New Zealand and never has. What changed recently is where its programmes live: since October 2025 Hulu has replaced the Star brand inside Disney+ internationally, including here — so the shows people search for are already available, just under a different logo.
The short version
- There is no Hulu subscription sold in New Zealand.
- Hulu-branded content sits inside Disney+, which starts at NZ$9.99 a month with ads.
- Some Hulu originals are licensed to other services here instead, so a specific title may be on Neon, TVNZ+ or available to buy.
- A VPN will not reliably unlock the American Hulu, and signing up needs a United States payment method regardless.
Why the shows moved
Disney owns Hulu outright and has been consolidating its services. Outside the United States, adult-oriented titles used to sit under a Disney+ section called Star; from 8 October 2025 that section became Hulu, with the same catalogue and a new name. ESPN content is included on every Disney+ tier as well.
For a New Zealand viewer the practical effect is simple: searching Disney+ for a Hulu title usually finds it, and no extra subscription is involved.
What Disney+ costs here
| Plan | Price | Streams | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with Ads | NZ$9.99 a month | 2 | 1080p, no downloads |
| Standard | NZ$18.99 a month or NZ$189.99 a year | 2 | 1080p |
| Premium | NZ$25.99 a month or NZ$259.99 a year | 4 | 4K and HDR |
The ad-supported tier launched in Australia and New Zealand on 21 April 2026 and does not include downloads, which matters if you watch on flights or commutes.
Finding a specific Hulu title from New Zealand
Search inside the Disney+ app first. The Hulu section here carries the same adult-oriented drama and comedy that sat under Star until October 2025, including the FX catalogue and a large share of Hulu’s own originals. If a title is licensed for New Zealand, that is where it will be, and no second subscription is involved.
If nothing comes up, check the New Zealand rental stores before assuming the show is unavailable. Rights for individual series are sold separately from the platform deal, so a Hulu original can end up on another local service or on sale by the season while everything around it sits on Disney+.
Getting the most out of Disney+ once you are there
The ad-supported tier is the cheapest way in at NZ$9.99, but it has no downloads, which matters for travel and commuting. Premium is the only tier with 4K and four simultaneous streams. For 4K you want about 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth per stream — untroubled by any current fibre plan, though several streams at once can strain older fixed wireless connections. Our speed test shows what your connection actually delivers.
If a title really is not here
Rights are sold country by country, so a handful of Hulu originals are licensed to other New Zealand services or are not available at all. Check Neon, TVNZ+ and the rental stores before assuming you need an American subscription.
Using a VPN to reach the United States service is legal in New Zealand but breaches Hulu’s terms of use, and there are two practical obstacles beyond the geo-block: Hulu requires a United States payment method, and it blocks known VPN address ranges. Our best VPN guide sets out what a VPN does and does not solve with streaming platforms, and the Paramount Plus guide goes through the same problem for a service that genuinely has no New Zealand presence.
Disclaimer
Prices and catalogue details are as at September 2026 and set by Disney. Using a VPN is lawful in New Zealand; accessing a service licensed for another country may breach its terms of use.
