Apple’s streaming service dropped the plus from its name in October 2025 and is now simply Apple TV — the same name as the app it plays in and the box it runs on, which has confused people ever since. This page covers what it costs in New Zealand, what comes with a new device, and how it fits against the rest of the market here.

Prices are the standard NZ monthly rates verified in September 2026 (Netflix, Disney+, Neon, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV, Sky Sport Now, Crunchyroll); YouTube Premium and Spotify are approximate. TVNZ+, ThreeNow and Freeview Streaming TV are free with ads.
Apple raised the United States price to US$14.99 in August 2026. The New Zealand price was still NZ$17.99 in September 2026, but a local increase usually follows within a year, so check apple.com/nz before assuming.
The three-months-free offer with a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV box or Vision device is easy to miss: it has to be claimed in the TV app within 90 days of setting the device up, and it does not stack with an existing subscription.
What you get for the money
Apple runs a small, expensive catalogue of originals rather than a deep licensed library. That makes it the clearest example of a service worth rotating: subscribe when a season you want is airing, watch it, cancel. There is no contract and nothing is lost by stopping.
Everything streams at up to 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos on supported hardware, and unusually for a premium service, that quality is included at the single price rather than reserved for a higher tier — which is where it beats Netflix, whose 4K sits on the NZ$33.99 Premium plan.
Where you can watch it
The Apple TV app is not limited to Apple hardware. It is built into most smart TVs sold in New Zealand, and available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Roku, Amazon Fire TV devices and through a browser at tv.apple.com. An Apple TV 4K box is the smoothest experience, but it is not required.
For 4K you want about 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth per stream. That is untroubled by any current fibre plan — the Commerce Commission measured Fibre 100 at an average of 106 Mbps in July 2026 — but 4K on several screens at once can strain older fixed wireless connections. Our speed test shows what you are actually getting, and if the picture drops mid-episode the guide to connections that keep dropping out covers the usual causes.
Stacking it with everything else
At NZ$17.99 Apple TV sits in the middle of the New Zealand market: above Disney+ with ads at NZ$9.99 and Prime Video at NZ$10.99, below Netflix Standard at NZ$25.99. Our streaming comparison totals a full subscription stack across a year, which is the number worth looking at before adding another service.
If you travel, the app follows your Apple ID rather than your location for most titles, though some licensed content is restricted by country. Using a VPN to change what you see is legal in New Zealand but breaches Apple’s terms of use, and as with every large platform, known VPN addresses are often blocked.
Disclaimer
Prices are as at September 2026 and are set by Apple, which changes them without notice. Using a VPN is lawful in New Zealand; accessing another country’s catalogue may breach the service’s terms of use.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Apple TV in New Zealand?
NZ$17.99 a month as at September 2026, shareable with up to five family members. Apple raised the US price in August 2026, so a local rise may follow.

Yes, seven days for new subscribers, and three months free when you buy an eligible Apple device — claimed in the TV app within 90 days of setting it up.
Do I need an Apple TV box to watch it?
No. The app is on most smart TVs, PlayStation and Xbox, Roku, Fire TV devices and in a browser at tv.apple.com.
Is 4K included on Apple TV?

Can I share Apple TV with my family?
Yes, with up to five family members through Family Sharing, each with their own profile and viewing history.
Is Apple TV worth it in New Zealand?
It has the smallest catalogue of the major services but includes 4K at the base price and has no contract, so it suits subscribing for a few months around a series you want and cancelling afterwards.
