Fire TV Stick NZ: Which Model, Setup and VPN Use

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick turns any television with an HDMI port into a streaming device for about a hundred dollars. It is sold through New Zealand retailers, and the local apps — TVNZ+, ThreeNow, Neon, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video — are all there. A few details work differently here than they do in the United States, and they are worth knowing before you buy.

Which model to buy

ModelRoughlyWorth knowing

The Vega operating system on the newest Select model is the detail to check. Older Fire TV sticks ran a version of Android, which is why sideloading apps was straightforward on them. Vega is not Android, so app availability depends on what Amazon has published for it — if a specific app matters to you, confirm it is listed before buying that model.

New Zealand and the Amazon Appstore

Amazon lists New Zealand as a retail market for current Fire TV sticks, and the Appstore serves New Zealand through its Australian region. In practice the mainstream apps are present. Amazon also closed its Appstore on non-Amazon Android devices in August 2025, which does not affect Fire TV hardware but does mean advice written for phones no longer applies.

Setting it up

  1. Plug the stick into an HDMI port and its power adapter into the wall — the USB port on a television often does not supply enough power.
  2. Connect to your Wi-Fi and sign in with an Amazon account. Use the 5 GHz band if your router offers it.
  3. Install the apps you actually use, then remove the promoted rows you do not.
  4. Sign in to each service separately. A Prime Video subscription does not carry over to anything else.

For 4K you want about 25 Mbps of steady bandwidth. That is comfortable on any current fibre plan, but the stick sits behind your television, often at the far end of the house from the router — the single most common cause of buffering on these devices is a weak signal rather than a slow plan. Our speed test shows what the connection delivers, and the guide to extending Wi-Fi coverage covers the fix if the signal is the problem.

Using a VPN on a Fire TV Stick

Most major VPN providers publish a Fire TV app, and installing one is the usual reason people look at these devices for privacy. Two caveats: on the Vega-based model, availability depends on the provider publishing for that platform, and streaming services actively block known VPN addresses, so a VPN is no guarantee of a different catalogue. Installing the VPN on your router instead covers the television and every other device at once. Our best VPN guide compares providers, including which run Auckland servers.

Finally, a note on the apps that turn up in search results promising free access to subscription sport and films. Those exist, they are not licensed, and installing them puts unvetted software on a device sitting on your home network. Our guide to unlicensed streaming sites explains the risks in more detail.

Disclaimer

Prices and model availability are as at September 2026 and vary by retailer. Using a VPN is lawful in New Zealand; accessing geo-restricted catalogues may breach a service’s terms of use.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a Fire TV Stick in New Zealand?

Yes. Amazon lists New Zealand as a retail market, local retailers stock them, and the New Zealand streaming apps are available through the Appstore’s Australian region.

How much is a Fire TV Stick in NZ?

About NZ$99.99 for the 4K Select at JB Hi-Fi, with the HD model cheaper and the 4K Plus dearer. Prices move with promotions.

Does TVNZ+ work on a Fire TV Stick?

Yes, along with ThreeNow, Neon, Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video. Check the app list for the specific model if you rely on something less common.

What is Vega OS and does it matter?

It is Amazon’s own operating system, replacing Android on newer models. App availability depends on developers publishing for it, so confirm any must-have app before buying that model.

Can I install a VPN on a Fire TV Stick?

Most major providers publish a Fire TV app. On Vega-based models it depends on the provider supporting the platform. Installing the VPN on your router covers the television either way.

Why does my Fire TV Stick keep buffering?

Usually Wi-Fi signal rather than your plan, because the stick sits behind the television. Try the 5 GHz band, move the router, or add a mesh point near the television.
