A mesh Wi-Fi system replaces one modem trying to cover the whole house with two or more units that share a single network. For New Zealand homes — long single-level layouts, fibre boxes installed in the garage, brick and foil-backed insulation — it is usually the most reliable way to get fibre speeds into every room.
How mesh Wi-Fi works
One unit connects to your modem (or replaces its Wi-Fi) and the others are placed around the house. Together they broadcast one network name and password, and they move your phone or laptop to whichever unit gives the best signal as you walk around. The link between the units is called the backhaul, and it decides how fast the far rooms are.

If your house already has Ethernet ports in some rooms, or a cable can be run through the ceiling, wired backhaul is the single biggest upgrade you can make — it lets even an entry-level mesh system perform like a premium one.
Wi-Fi 6, 6E or 7?

New Zealand opened the lower part of the 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz) for Wi-Fi in 2022; the upper part is not open here as it is in some other countries. That still gives Wi-Fi 6E and 7 equipment a clean, uncrowded band, but 6 GHz signals travel less far through walls, so the units need to be closer together. PB Tech’s own guidance is that Wi-Fi 6 and 6E satisfy most users, with Wi-Fi 7 mainly about future-proofing.

Mesh systems sold in New Zealand
Retailers carry mesh ranges from TP-Link (Deco), ASUS (ZenWiFi), Netgear (Orbi), D-Link (Eagle Pro AI) and eero, in two- and three-packs. Examples range from Wi-Fi 6 systems such as the TP-Link Deco X55 and ASUS ZenWiFi XD4S, through Wi-Fi 6E models like the Deco XE75 Pro, to Wi-Fi 7 systems such as the Deco BE85 and Netgear Orbi 870 series. Providers also supply mesh: One NZ uses TP-Link Deco units, including the Wi-Fi 7 Deco BE28 on fibre, and adding another unit of the same system is the simplest way to extend it. Prices move constantly, so compare current listings rather than relying on a figure in any article, including this one.
How many units, and where
- Start with two units for a typical three- or four-bedroom single-level house, three for large, long or two-storey homes, or where walls are brick or block.
- Place the second unit halfway between the main unit and the far rooms — in open air, off the floor, not in a cupboard.
- Keep line of sight where you can. A hallway beats a route through two bathrooms.
- Check the app. Every mesh app shows the connection quality between units. If it reports weak backhaul, move the satellite closer.
- Turn off the modem’s own Wi-Fi if the mesh plugs in behind it, or set the modem to bridge mode, so you do not run two competing networks.
Mesh with a provider modem
Most mesh systems plug into the LAN port of your provider’s modem. On fibre, many can also replace the modem entirely by connecting to the Chorus fibre box; that usually requires the provider’s VLAN setting, which is published on its bring-your-own-modem page. Is mesh worth it?
Mesh is worth it when a wired speed test matches your plan but Wi-Fi in parts of the house does not.
