Starlink Mini NZ: Price, Plans, Power and Real-World Use

Starlink Mini is the laptop-sized version of Starlink’s satellite dish, with the Wi-Fi router built in and low enough power use to run from a car socket or a large power bank. In New Zealand it sells for about NZ$349, and it is aimed at people who need internet away from a fixed address: campervans, boats, tradies, rural work sites and holiday homes.

Mini or the Standard kit?

The Standard kit costs about NZ$599 at retail, uses a larger dish with a separate router, and is designed for permanent installation at a home. The Mini trades some of that capability for portability: one small unit, no separate router, and power draw low enough for 12-volt systems. For a house, the Standard kit is the usual choice; for anything that moves, the Mini is.

Starlink offers a 30-day trial, and in some areas no upfront hardware cost on Residential plans. Speed

The Commerce Commission measured Starlink’s home plans in April 2026 at about 130 Mbps (Residential 100) and 245 Mbps (Residential Max) down, with roughly 25 ms latency. Those tests used fixed installations; a Mini on a campsite will usually be slower, and obstructions matter more than anything else. Our speed test works over Starlink if you want to check a site.

Placement

The dish needs a clear view of the sky. Trees, cliffs and buildings cause dropouts as satellites pass behind them. The Starlink app includes an obstruction check — use it before committing to a spot.

Power

At 25–40 W, a 20,000 mAh USB-C power bank rated for 100 W output runs the Mini for roughly two hours; a vehicle’s 12-volt system or a portable power station handles longer sessions. Always use a supply that meets the 100 W USB-C or 12–48 V DC requirement, or the Mini may not start.

Coverage in the house or van

Is the Mini right for you?

It suits people who move, work remotely from sites without coverage, or want a backup connection for when fibre or 4G fails.
